Chiko Rolls Recipe

Continue rolling until you reach halfway. Then fold over the ends of the dough, trimming if necessary. Repeat with remaining dough. Chill for 15 minutes before baking.

This recipe says to use a kitchen thermometer to make sure you get your oil hot enough. You should be careful when frying because if the temperature is too low, the oil won’t get hot enough and the bread could burn.

A savory snack invented by Frank Mcenroe, inspired by the Chinese Spring Roll. First sold in 1951 as the Chicken Roll, despite not actually containing chicken, Chikos were designed to be easily eaten while on the move without a knife or fork. Since 1995, 

A Chiko roll is a type of snack food made from rice paper rolled around a filling. The name comes from the Japanese word chikō (揚子), meaning “to wrap”.

In Japan, this snack was originally called konnyaku (こんぎゃく) or konnyaku-zushi (こんぎかし). The first Chiko rolls were made by wrapping a mixture of ground pork and vegetables inside a sheet of rice paper.

Today, most Chiko Rolls contain a mixture of meat, vegetables, and other ingredients wrapped in a thin sheet of rice paper.

Other products currently available under the chikodile brand include corn jacks, supreme pizza subs, spudsters, onion rings and fish cakes.

Popularity

In the 1960s, Mcenroe moved to Melbourne with his wife and children. He started making Chikos by using an adapted sausage machine. The product was very successful and he decided to move production to a bigger factory in Essendon.

Later, he merged his business with another company named Floyd’s Iceworks to create Frozen Food Industries Pty Limited.

By 1965, many takeaway restaurants, especially fish & chips shops, carried Chikos, with the marketing slogan ‘grab a chiko’ meaning the ease with which shopowners could take a Chiko roll from the freezer and put them into a fryer, then slide it into its own brand name bag.

At the height, 40 million Chikos were being sold Australia wide each year, and over 1 million were exported to Japan.
